To GARF
I have had my 75 gallon reef tank set up now for about two years, and was beginning to get very frustrated. It seemed as if the algae blooms were coming very frequently. I was almost to the point of giving up. Then I found mine and my tanks savior "GARF!!!" I have recently purchased a reef janitors pack, and within two weeks my tank looks a million times better. I honestly can not say how many thousands of dollars I have spent trying to control algae in my tank.

The product you advertise and sell is the best ever. My live rock looks live again, the base rock and crushed aragonite has never looked so good. This has to be the very best investment that I have ever made on any aquarium I have ever owned. BTW I also got ten pounds of GARF GRUNGE, exceptionally good stuff. If anyone really wants to see a huge difference in the appearance of their tank, new or old, listen to what these guys have to say.

We are excited about our new project - THE FISHING GRAND FATHERS - we make it possible for people to teach children to fish.

Adults who fish are some of the best Conservationists we have the pleasure of meeting. Some children never learn to fish, and we will help people who want to teach these young folks to love nature.

THE MOST DEMOCRATIC, RESTFUL, NATURAL AND UNIVERSAL SPORT!!!

There are few anglers in penitentiaries, the "fishing bug" and the "crime bug" seldom, reside in the same person. From George Washington to Franklin Roosevelt, many of our Presidents have been ardent fisherman.

For youth and adult, there is nothing more beneficial, than to commune with Nature in her woods and on her waters. The refined angling spirit cannot sin against fellow mortals, nor against society.

Here at GARF we hope to do as much as possible to teach people to love nature. Respect for something comes with learning about it. Young people should be invited to share and learn about the natural world that is on display in your reefs.

These same youg people can learn about nature when you offer to include them in your fishing and camping trips. If you know of any youngster who needs fishing equipment please e-mail us so we can help.

Today we received a great email from Carl Brown. I love his idea of having an Aragocrete making party.
From: "carl brown"
To:

Tonight we had our first agarocrete party, a couple of our fellow reefers came over and we made around 150 lbs. of rock. This probably wont be the only one I am sure.

My wife and I would like to thank you for making this possible by putting all this usefull information on the web. We have been keeping a marine tank for about 5 years (long before the nemo movie) and we wanted to set up a smaller tank for my wife. since over these past few years we have become more informed about where and how rock and marine animals are collected and how this is destroying our worlds reefs.

We decided that we could not justify buying wild rock (plus it is very exspensive) we followed the recipe from your site and made (after a few vain attemps) some very nice rock,we cured it of course following your directions and put it into a 46 gal.bowfront tank.

Some of our friends have seen the tank and love how the rock looks, and that is how our first rock party came about.
We have attached a photo of the 46 bow.
thanks again carl and deb.

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

p.s. since this photo was taken we have removed the riser tubes from the u/g filter plate and covered with substrait the u/g filter is raised about 3/4 of a inch from the bottom we hoped this counts as a plenum, the clown is tank raised.

Carl,
Yes, the undergravel filter will work well for a plenum, I have used them many times. This reminds me there are hundreds of ways to do a reef aquarium right, and you are teaching all of us things. Please write more about your rock making get together!!

Dear LeRoy and Sally Jo,
First off let me thank you for the kindness and understanding through this past week. I came to you with a problem and you fixed it immediately. That's something you don't really see from too often. Not only did I get great service but also great corals. I can't find corals like these anywhere here in New Mexico. Really you guys out do yourselves.

I have a 3 year old that i'm slowly educating about the interesting and important values of reefs. I hope that you guys keep the funding and whatever else you may need to keep doing what you're doing because it's outstanding.

I would gladly tell anyone else to buy from you and listen to what you have to say. The information you share is equal to the spectacular corals. I hope to have my reef as nice as yours someday.

Thanks for everything. If you put this on your site i have this to say to newcomers to GARF, GIVE GARF A TRY, THERE'S NO WAY ANYONE COULD BE DISAPPOINTED. FROM THE GRUNGE TO THE CORALS THIS SITE WILL BENEFIT ANYONE THAT LOOKS AT IT AND CALLS GARF TO PLACE AN ORDER. Thanks and i'm sure i'll be placing more orders soon

Sally Jo & GARF:

I just wanted to thank you guys for another terrific order received from GARF. I continue to be amazed by your generosity with your time, knowledge, and critters. The algae cleaners are fun to watch and very industrious and as aresult of their labor, my tank looks better than it has in quite a while. As they remove the hair algae it reveals that I have nice pink coraline algae that has been hidden on my live rock.

And thanx for the yellow zoos and I also appreciate that I was sent a Red Sea Xenia since I was sent a pink creeper on my last order by accident. I simply mentioned it on the phone and in fact stated that I was quite pleased with the pink creeper even though it was not what I ordered.

The fellow offered to replace it without hesitation. I can say that I have dealt with some other internet aquatic livestock companies and that never would have occured.

You will be the only folks I ever deal with since it is clear that your heart and spirit is devoted to what you do. So again, a heart felt thank you.

Keep on reefing!
Jerry

In response to you query:
What types of algae control do you use in your coral farming tanks?

Like many others, I use a combination of snails and small hermit crabs. There is one animal I use that is fantastic for hair algae control; the Sailfin Tang.
I used to have quite a hair algae problem, and while the snails of various types along with the hermits did their share of algae control, the Sailfin Tang by far did the most to eradicate hair algae from my tank.
Thank you,
Jeff Cole

LeRoy I received your order of 250 reef janitors all arrived safely. I placed the majority of them in the 120 gallon reef system and about 10% in my refugium. I cannot over state that the interior of my reef tank was covered in green and brown algae to the point that I could not keep up with cleaning it. Not to mention a very persistent red algae problem.

Well, to my amazement the reef janitors went immediately to work. The next morning the entire front glass was clean enough for me to see the coral, they worked their way around both sides and are now working on the back. The tank looks like it did when I first set it up.

I will be sending you some of my calperia next time I service the refugium.

Thank you for the continued support and advise.

WE ARE DOING THE RESEARCH NEEDED TO BUILD THE FIRST PUBLIC AQAURIUM IN THE WORLD THAT WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE STUDY OF GEOTHERMAL WATER AND HOW IT CAN BE PROTECTED. MANY OF THE NUTRIENTS AND MINERALS NEEDED FOR A HEALTHY OCEAN COME FROM GEOTHERMAL SOURCES.

Geothermal springs both in the mountains of Idaho and in the deepest parts of the ocean may hold the cure for many diseases. Bacteria from geothermal springs are now being used in new medicines and in modern laboratory methods. The rapid cloning of DNA would not be possible if it were not for some bacteria from Yellow Stone Park.Every year thousands of geothermal springs are dried up because of poor irrigation practices.

This public aquarium will be the only aquarium in the world where you will be able to see cross sections of the many types of thermal springs. These displays will allow study of the habitats and the animals that live in these unique and secret places. Many of the endangered species will be able to be reproduced so they do not become extinct before we even have a chance to name them.

I have just built a small greenhouse over the Garden of Hope and I am using the geothermal water to heat two of the garden beds. This week I will be able to take the ground temparatures of all four beds. It will be interesting to see if the two beds with the hot water from the 3/16" tubes are much warmer. The herbs have grown very fast in the hot plastic dome:)

We have been having an exciting time exploring the reef tanks at the foundation. I have been very busy propagating corals from our brood stock reefs. Many of the SPS corals grew quite large during the summer. I am propagating some great colored Acroprora for next weeks SPS special.
I was amazed at how big some of my SPS colonies have grown. I was sure they were doing well this summer, but I did not have any idea they were so massive.

It is always great to get so many nice e-mails like this new one!

Both the video and the DVD are ready!! The DVD includes three coral slide shows and more!

OUR FIRST CORAL FARMING VIDEO IS READY! The video has the first three propagation programs. You can order the video for 19.95.

The first one hour DVD is now ready - GARF'S CORAL PROPAGATION - is an advanced DVD with three seperate programs. You will learn SPS coral propagation, Soft coral propagation, and Xenia farming. The first DVDs are being burned on my Mac G4 and there are only a few available, so call LeRoy toll free at 800-600-6163, and he will ship you one for only 49.00. Leave a message because the DVDs will be reserved for the early callers. Besides the three advanced method videos, there are three slide shows that I have set to music.

ZOOXANTHELLAE SYMBIODINIUM AND BACTERIA SYMBIONT RESEARCH

Garf is preparing to send several ocean farmed Acropora heads to our research partner in New York. These heads will be held in a new sterile system that we are setting up to prevent any recombination of symbionts. These corals will be distributed to many of the other research partners after they are allowed to rest in New York. The fragments will be allowed to grow in separate systems for one year. The corals will then be shipped back to New York for DNA mapping.

We have shipped the fifth batch of SPS corals to join the original "NEW YORK SEVEN" Garf's oldest sps corals, to New York for research. GARF has been chosen as the research partner with a major east coast aquarium. We have started donating over one hundred strains of SPS corals. The researchers in New York are very interested in finding out why many of the sps corals in GARF's collection have become so incredibly hardy in captivity. By mapping the DNA of the symbionts living in GARF's corals such as the Green Slimer, Mike Paletta Blue, and Sally Jo's Purple Bonsai they will be able to isolate some of the new strains of zooxanthellae.

I am posting part of the first report from this research.
Dear AZA Research Partners,

Thank you again for your continued efforts in the Symbiodinium study. We have processed and analyzed your first group of shipped samples. Following is a brief progress report for the current AZA Symbiodinium study.

This report contains a brief review of the methods used in this study; an explanation of the data found your previously forwarded Excel spreadsheets, and a list of suggested readings.

Once the samples arrive at the NY Aquarium, the live samples you send are labeled, accessioned, and placed in culture for future Symbiodinium studies. The Symbiodinium from the preserved samples you shipped are extracted from the coral host with an airbrush (to blast the coral tissue off the skeleton) and a centrifuge (to help separate the cells from- for example- the denser bits of loose skeleton). Then, we work the samples through a series of- primarily- chemical steps (e.g. organic extractions, alcohol washes, enzyme reactions, etc.) which result in- mostly- isolated Symbiodinium DNA. Next, the Symbiodinium DNA is taken through a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which make millions of copies of one particular gene, the large subunit (28s-like) rDNA gene (common in all known Symbiodinium types).

Next, a procedure called restriction fragment length polymorphism (RPLF) analysis is performed. The PCR products are digested into smaller pieces with restriction enzymes (TaqI and HhaI).They are then carried through agarose gel electrophoresis, which separates the various pieces of DNA, by their sizes. The resulting RFLP pattern of DNA bands, tagged with a chemical stain in the gel, is photographed under UV light. The gene from each Symbiodinium type (A, B, C, D, etc.) is digested in a different way by the restriction enzymes and therefore produces a characteristic pattern or 'DNA footprint' on the gel (observed in the aforementioned photograph).
