Small Polyp Stony Corals (SPS)

Phylum Cnidaria

Class Anthozoa

Subclass Scleractinia

For a long time, SPS corals were the holy grail of many marine aquarists. The reason of course is obvious; nothing in the world can compare to the incredible beauty of many SPS. This group of corals has brilliant, otherworldly colors and comes in amazing shapes, beyond anything any human architect could design. Unlike all other cnidarians, these corals produce a skeleton made of calcium carbonate, a rock-hard white material (thus small polyp stony). In the ocean, the accumulation of stony coral skeletons has created coral reefs.
