Strong light is needed to grow these corals, as their photosynthetic partners produce food from light. For a very general recommendation, four to four and a half watts per gallon will be sufficient. Of course, this can vary quite a bit depending on how deep the tank is, how clean the water is and how near the lights the corals are. For example, one can get by with much less light if the coral is placed at the very surface of the water only a few inches away from the lights.
