Another aspect of high water quality is the addition of trace elements. Seawater is an extremely complicated substance filled with minute traces of certain chemicals. Many of these minor chemicals and several major chemicals will need to be added to the water in the tank in order to provide an imitation of seawater. Without calcium, for instance, the corals will not be able to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. A complete formula for trace element additions can be found here.
