Coralline algae has basically the same requirements as stony corals (strong light, good current), so if there is lots coralline algae growing in your tank it is ready for SPS. In the wild, coral larvae will settle on coralline algae to grow, since if the coralline is growing it must also be a good place for a stony coral. A great way to start coralline algae growing in your tank is with GARF grunge or GARF aquacultured live rock, both of which have large amounts of the algae.
GARF sells pieces of these corals, taken from our tanks. They come attached to plugs and are about 1 to 2 inches high. We have found that this is the best size to ship SPS corals, and is also the size at which they grow fastest and are healthiest. Many of these fascinating and necessary animals are disappearing in the wild due to human pollution and changing weather conditions. It is our goal to create a genetic bank of corals in aquariums across the world so that these corals will never go extinct. Please support the wild reef by only buying corals that have been grown in captivity.
