GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Hello, I hope you are enjoying the online tour! Each year we host a Coral Farming Seminar in October. Last year we had 120 farmers visiting Boise. This year we were unable to host the seminar because of Sally Jo's health problems, but she wants to host a virtual tour on the web site. This is the third installment. This article shows the view from the front steps of the Foundation. We also show the autumn colors in our wetland and Eddie's rock yard.
This is what we see each day when we come to work at GARF. The Warm Springs Historical District has dozens of gold rush mansions that were built during the late 1800s. Many of these homes have been in the same families for over 100 years. The Mission Style home that is across Warm Springs Avenue from GARF has been in the same family since it was built. It is rare to have so many homes that have never been in the real estate market on one street.

The entire Warm Springs Historical District has access to 180 degree geothermal water from a pipe line in the center of Warm Springs Avenue. When I was younger the pipe line was still the original wooden one that was installed in the late 1800s. I remember two things about the street from the early 1960s. The most noticeable thing in the winter is that the right lane of Warm Springs Avenue never has any snow on it even during extended bad weather. It is odd to have ice and snow covering everything for miles when the entire length of the street is dry and clear. The other thing I remember is that once in a while a truck would cave in the wooden pipe line and it would be stuck in a large hole. This was an unexpected, and exciting thing to see as we were walking to the 7th grade at East Junior High School. It gave us something to talk about because the truck would be surrounded by billowing steam, and the driver would be trying to get the wrecker truck to back up over the pipe to help.

At GARF we have constructed an Ornamental Wet Land project and the many ducks are lucky that the city replaced the wooden pipe with an insulated ceramic pipe about 20 years ago. Now the ducks and fish have a warm place to spend the winter. Leonel is lucky that he can park his Durango in front of the Foundation with no fear of it falling into a hole:). GARF has helped many people start their own wet lands projects, and we will post more information about our research into commercially self supporting water treatment wet lands.

Eddie Postma makes AragocreteTM out doors until the snow starts to fall. You can see the equipment he uses to make his wonderful creations. The Styrofoam boxes hold the heat generated by the curing AragocreteTM so the sculptures can harden for two days before they are moved to the Geothemal ponds . The rain soft geothermal water is treated by extracting and neutralizing the alkaloid's in the cement. This helps our fish and plants, and it is fully contained to our zero dicharge wet land.

Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.

The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.
