GARF'S MOST OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What species make up your Reef Janitor packages and are they reef friendly?

Through our research here at GARF we have come up with a chemical free solution to algae control. Four GENERA of snails along with a several species of hermit crab make up our Reef JanitorTM algae control package. This is the finest mixture of hardy, herbivorous marine snails that can clean between rocks and keep the glass free of algae. A proper blend of snails are custom mixed for your reefs problems. Each Reef JanitorTM order is made up of Cerith (Cerithium strereusmusearum) and several other species of Ceriths, Several species of Nerite such as (Nerita funiculata) from tropicl America and the black Pi Pi Pi Nerite from Johnston islands, and Astraea snails (2 tropical species). Each species of snail has a different feeding mode and when combined together make up an unstoppable algae eating machine.

Cerithium, listed in Julian Sprung's Reef Aquarium as a good algae eater, is the best member of the family Cerithiidae we have tested. This snail has a slender, pointed shell allowing access between rocks and other tight places in your aquarium. Cerithium cleans in a zig zag pattern and its radula are equipped to remove diatoms so well that they do not regrow from the original algal film. This species of cerith will not disturb or dislodge any member of your reef system.

The nerite snail is another wonderful algae eater that is included in every Reef Janitor package. Nerita is of tropical origin and has a one half inch black shell with ridges. This snail does a great job removing all algae and diatoms from rocks and glass, it leaves no algal film. The nerite is listed in Reef Aquarium as a good algae eater and our research here at GARF supports this opinion. Due to their tendency to migrate to the top of the water during certain lunar cycles, this snail should only be placed in aquariums constructed with a rim or lip.

A popular, long lived mollusk, the Astraea, is the final snail included in GARF's Reef Janitor
package. Astraea is a very active glass cleaner and the fastest diatom consumer, but tends to leave a bio-film on the glass. Although this snail can not take on all of the algae eating responsibilities, it is a must for a good mixture of algae eating snails. The Astraea is completely reef safe.

Mexican Red Legged hermit crabs (Clibanarius digueti) are one of the most popular and most important Janitor for hair algae control. Clibanarius is usually red in appearance with expanded chromatophores forming blue spots over their chelipeds and walking legs. Antennae and antennules are bright red and the tips of all legs are also red or orange. This small crab is the best hermit we have tested. Clibanarius feeds on algae growing on rocks or substrate. No evidence suggests that this crab feeds on any of the HEALTHY snails included in the Reef Janitor package.

There has NOT been one report of these hermits eating true coralline algae.
We have these hermits in ALL of our reefs and we grow lush thick coralline.
Competition for shells is the only real concern and this problem has been solved by including free empty shells with every Janitor shipment. Every day we observe Clibanarius cleaning sponges, soft and stony coral colonies with no damage what so ever to these organisms. There has NOT been one report of these hermits eating true coralline algae. We have these hermits in all of our reefs and we grow lush thick coralline.
We are now finishing two years of tests on two new species of hermits that we will soon make avail;able for our growing mix of REEF JANITORSTM
All of our orders are 100 percent guaranteed!
