SALLY JO'S FIRST REEF AQUARIUM IS NOW FOUR YEARS OLD
This sps coral reef was started on Valentine's Day four years ago and these pictures show the top part of the SPS corals. This aquarium is truly a bonsai coral reef that is managed by Sally Jo. All of the corals and this aquarium were grown from frags that were less than 1 in. long. It is hard for me to believe how many coral cuttings have been harvested during the last several years. This 55 gal. brood stock aquarium is truly a wonder to behold. The second aquarium that sets just to the left of this aquarium is now full of 1 in. sps frags.
The first picture shows some of the incredibly beautiful colored SPS corals that are growing in this aquarium. This brood stock aquarium now has more than 200 species of hard and soft corals. This aquarium has an Eco-Sand Plenum, an overflow box, and a small sump. The sump contains an extra power head and a submersible heater. As the water returns from the main tank it falls over a small pile of the Aragonite.
The next picture shows two of my favorite corals. The coral on the right is one of several types of bright purple and blue Acropora that have brilliant green polyps. All of these green polyp corals rapidly grow a large base plate when the frag is glued to a piece of rock. Each of these specimens grow many short branches, and this growth form works perfect in a bonsai reef.
The Acropora on the left the this picture has some of the longest polyps that we have seen in our collection. Each night Sally Jo shows me a computer slide show of the pictures that she is taken that day. For several weeks, I asked Sally Jo what is that coral? In many of the pictures this coral looks like a soft coral that is covered with small hairy polyps. Last weekend she surprised me with five small frags of this coral. I glued all of the frags to a nice piece of coralline algae covered Aragocrete. These frags were glued about half an inch apart, and soon the bases will grow together.
This is my favorite picture because it shows many of the most beautiful corals in the center of this 4 ft. long aquarium. I've seen this aquarium almost every day for four years, and it still amazes me when I look at the pictures. None of these pictures comes close to showing the amazing color variations in this colony of SPS corals. If this aquarium only contained the colony's showing in this picture it would still be amazing. This picture only shows about a third of the colony's that grow in the top one half of this reef. You have to remember that Sally Jo spends hours each week trimming and placing each coral in the exact place where it will be safe and where it will thrive.
This 55 gallon reef now has six- 110 VHO Bulbs. Sally Jo always starts her new reefs with low lighting. She increases the lighting as she adds more sps corals. There are five power heads in different parts of this reef The reef in this picture supplies about 100 sps frags per week. Many of these frags are moved to our other aquariums, and after they are established in several reefs we start to sell them. We offer many of our frags to members who have let us know what they a waiting for.
The newest reef in her office is just one-year-old this week, and it is one of the most beautiful reef aquariums I have ever seen. In a few days of will be posting a birthday page for this reef. The third reef has three-40 W bulbs, no sump, and a small skimmer. This reef was started with no wild live rock.
