This first picture shows a large disk of the purple Bonsai Acropora that is growing on a piece of
dead coral. You can see one of the emerald crabs that we use at GARF to prevent unwanted
hair algae from taking over the aquariums. For the last six years we have been conducting research
into natural algae control. Our staff is trained to ask you questions about your aquarium when you call
for Reef Janitors. By finding out how old your aquarium is and what type of lighting you use
we are able to diagnose most problems.
The second picture was taken a few minutes after the first picture and you can see that a
hermit crab is now cleaning up after the Emerald crab. At GARF we recommend that you have
at least one and a half Reef Janitors per gallon. We also use one Emerald crab for each ten gallons.
When a reef aquarium is stocked with the proper number of herbivores
- they should be able to see the algae but you should not be able to see it.
We have found it to be very important that the Reef Janitor crew be made up of several different species
of hermit crabs and snails. By stocking a variety of species it is much more likely that
they will be able to control a wide variety of Algae.
