This Acropora is in the group of corals that always have one extended tentacle on each polyp. This group contains Acropora millipora. All of these corals make a great show piece coral after they have grown for a while. The Acropora in this group have balcony or pocket shaped corallites, and they extend their polyps in the daytime. These Acropora make very good ornamental corals because they have some unique colors that are not found in other SPS corals.

The coral in this week's picture is named the Blue Hair for obvious reasons. There are several things that make a coral very desirable for aquaculture, and this one has all of those characteristics. The perfect aquacultured Acropora needs to have bright colors, a small body form, and the polyps should be extended during the day. Many of the corals we sell have these three characteristics, and they have been in captivity long enough to become hardy.
