|Gosh, looking back on these pictures it is simply amazing how much one animal can grow in just six months. In this picture you find a top view of the animal shortly after I had cut one stalk off. That one stalk was cut into several pieces and netted to plugs and placed back into the mother tank. The one stalk made about 20 babies and some of those babies will be ready for cutting in just a month or so.
From my experience or perhaps we could call it learning from lack of experience it is best to allow this stalk to heal and have its polyps start growing back before preparing for the next attempted surgery. I find that allowing this animal to rest about one month before making your next cut is very important. I do not know if that is because the animal grows so fast that it can not find enough energy to grow as well as heal at the same time.
I have to tell you I don't think I could have come any closer to having a heart attack as when I revisited my tank later in the day I had cut the Xenia. It was right before the lights went out. She was all shrunk up into big balls no polyps where visible at all. My heart must have skipped a couple of beats for I thought all was lost and my only hope was for the little babies I had just made.
I began to envision starting the whole process over again with just one polyp. I then looked over at my other tanks and realized that they were just closing down for the night. Many of the Xenias do this just before the lights go out. Boy, was I relieved.

Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.
The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.
