SALLY JO ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION

Q. How do I pick out the corals that will be right for my reef?

A. Hello , I wanted to write personally to thank you for your order. We will call you soon to tell you about availability and set up a delivery date. We will be happy to answer your questions. Your order helps GARF continue the research and education we are doing.
When we call, we will help you pick out the best corals for your order. We have many corals that are very hardy. We have captive raised strains that are very strong, and they ship very well. If you have noticed any corals on our web site that you may want, please feel free to ask if they are ready to go. We often do custom propagation of corals that people want. We have helped thousands of people and it is our goal to help you have the system you desire. Thank you again for your order!

Many of you said that you enjoyed the first page from the past I posted last week so I have linked to a great page you may not have seen.

It is so fun to look back through the years of research we have documented on this web site.

We started this site in 1995, and you can look back over the pages to learn a bit about the history of coral farming - THE GREAT THING - is that we have all just started this adventure.

Sally Jo and I just returned from Michigan. We are honored that we were able to speak at the MidWest Marine Conference. 4-17-04 Ann Arbor. Michigan
This was the 6th year for this great one day conference.

GREAT NEWS FOR DO IT YOUR SELF LOVERS!!

For the last few weeks I have been posting great pages from the past -

REEF AQUARIUM FARMING NEWS - ISSUE # 25 FEBRUARY 2000 PAGE 1

THIS IS THE KING OF DO IT YOUR SELF PAGES!

I found this great page from the past when I was searching for articles about making AragocreteTM. REEF AQUARIUM FARMING NEWS - SALLY JO'S NOVEMBER 1998 UPDATE

GARF is as dedicated now to teaching Coral farming for a sustainable hobby as we were in the early 1990s.

If you enjoy this page from the past I will do it again.

Yes, you can set up a living reef aquarium that uses captive grown corals and fish, but more important than that you can use man made live rock. At GARF we have learned that the wild reef can thrive, and it can provide a sustained harvest of fish and invertabrates IF WE LEAVE THE REEF STRUCTURE ALONE! The live rock harvest destroys the very reef needed by baby fish and spawning corals.

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION The first one hour DVD is now ready - GARF'S CORAL PROPAGATION DVD - is an advanced DVD with three seperate programs. You will learn SPS coral propagation, Soft coral propagation, and Xenia farming. The first DVDs ready and there are only a few available, so call Leonel toll free at 800-600-6163, and he will ship you one for only 39.00. This DVD sells for $49.00, but you can save $20.00 by calling Leonel today. Leave a message because the DVDs will be reserved for the early callers. Besides the three advanced method videos, there are three slide shows that I have set to music.

Be certain to add extra Reef JanitorsTM now that the days are getting longer, because pest algae thrive with the extra light and heat.

Leonel and Norm will help you create a custom mix of Reef JanitorsTM that will clean your reef. They have helped thousands of reefers have a great reef aquarium. THEY CAN HELP YOU TOO. Call them toll free 800-600-6163.

We will send you two pounds of GARF GrungeTM free with any order. - GrungeTM is the thing you need to add many strains of coralline algae, and hundreds of other beneficial micro invertebrates.

Learn more about GARF Grunge plusTM I am happy to say that we now have the finest batch of living mud that we have ever grown INTRODUCING GRUNGE LITETM

I am building a 120 gal reef tank and i plan to use all of Eddie's sculptures for my rock.(It will be a slow process as i can only get one rock at a time..) I can not wait for my system to be up and running!!! I will send you'll some pics if you don't mind, to show you my progress!

Thanks Leroy, thanks Trevor, thanks Sally Joe, thanks Curtis and thanks Eddie!!! (I hope I didn't leave anyone out!!)

Our Reef Janitors are doing very well. It is important that you get a great selection of hardy herbivores when you are fighting algae in your reef aquarium. Here at GARF we have learned to keep our Janitors healthy so they will thrive in your reef.

Our staff is trained to get you the proper mix of Janitors that will solve your algae problem. When you buy any Janitor package with over 50 Janitors you will receive two free corals. These corals can be SPS or soft, and they will be very colorful. This special is only going to be available for one week. You can pay less for some common snails, but our healthy custom Janitor package will live and they will work on your algae problem.

Leroy,
First I have to say thank you...Everytime I get a package from GARF I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. My fiance laughs at me because she sees how happy I get when I receive a package from you and how I rush to the door to receive it. My fiance always asks...why is it that when ever you are going to get a package you rush to the door but when my mother comes over you don't...I told her because one simple reason...because my future mother-in-law isn't from GARF!

From the Reef Janitors to the Grunge to the soft corals I received yesterday everything I have received is always beyond my expectations. Thank you and your staff again for the great job you have done.

Best Regards,
Mike Lukaczyn

All of the staff here at GARF are thankful for all of the wonderful support you have given us during the last several years. We hope we can continue to help you enjoy your reef aquariums. We have been able to complete some great research projects, and we will be sharing our discoveries with you this semester.

I have just built a small greenhouse over the Garden of Hope and I am using the geothermal water to heat two of the garden beds. This week I will be able to take the ground temparatures of all four beds. It will be interesting to see if the two beds with the hot water from the 3/16" tubes are much warmer. The herbs have grown very fast in the hot plastic dome:)

We have been having an exciting time exploring the reef tanks at the foundation. I have been very busy propagating corals from our brood stock reefs. Many of the SPS corals grew quite large during the summer. I am propagating some great colored Acroprora for next weeks SPS special.
I was amazed at how big some of my SPS colonies have grown. I was sure they were doing well this summer, but I did not have any idea they were so massive.

ZOOXANTHELLAE SYMBIODINIUM AND BACTERIA SYMBIONT RESEARCH

Garf is preparing to send several ocean farmed Acropora heads to our research partner in New York. These heads will be held in a new sterile system that we are setting up to prevent any recombination of symbionts. These corals will be distributed to many of the other research partners after they are allowed to rest in New York. The fragments will be allowed to grow in separate systems for one year. The corals will then be shipped back to New York for DNA mapping.

We have shipped the fifth batch of SPS corals to join the original "NEW YORK SEVEN" Garf's oldest sps corals, to New York for research. GARF has been chosen as the research partner with a major east coast aquarium. We have started donating over one hundred strains of SPS corals. The researchers in New York are very interested in finding out why many of the sps corals in GARF's collection have become so incredibly hardy in captivity. By mapping the DNA of the symbionts living in GARF's corals such as the Green Slimer, Mike Paletta Blue, and Sally Jo's Purple Bonsai they will be able to isolate some of the new strains of zooxanthellae.

I am posting part of the first report from this research.
Dear AZA Research Partners,

Thank you again for your continued efforts in the Symbiodinium study. We have processed and analyzed your first group of shipped samples. Following is a brief progress report for the current AZA Symbiodinium study.

This report contains a brief review of the methods used in this study; an explanation of the data found your previously forwarded Excel spreadsheets, and a list of suggested readings.

Once the samples arrive at the NY Aquarium, the live samples you send are labeled, accessioned, and placed in culture for future Symbiodinium studies. The Symbiodinium from the preserved samples you shipped are extracted from the coral host with an airbrush (to blast the coral tissue off the skeleton) and a centrifuge (to help separate the cells from- for example- the denser bits of loose skeleton). Then, we work the samples through a series of- primarily- chemical steps (e.g. organic extractions, alcohol washes, enzyme reactions, etc.) which result in- mostly- isolated Symbiodinium DNA. Next, the Symbiodinium DNA is taken through a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which make millions of copies of one particular gene, the large subunit (28s-like) rDNA gene (common in all known Symbiodinium types).

Next, a procedure called restriction fragment length polymorphism (RPLF) analysis is performed. The PCR products are digested into smaller pieces with restriction enzymes (TaqI and HhaI).They are then carried through agarose gel electrophoresis, which separates the various pieces of DNA, by their sizes. The resulting RFLP pattern of DNA bands, tagged with a chemical stain in the gel, is photographed under UV light. The gene from each Symbiodinium type (A, B, C, D, etc.) is digested in a different way by the restriction enzymes and therefore produces a characteristic pattern or 'DNA footprint' on the gel (observed in the aforementioned photograph).

I am happy that our hobby is starting to produce many of the corals we keep in our aquariums. GARF is contacted each week by people who are starting to farm corals. If you are farming corals on any scale please send us an e-mail, leroy@garf.org, so we can learn from your experience. We are certain that many small locally owned coral farms will make a positive impact on our hobby.

This letter is the finest message I could have received. We reef keepers CAN make a difference in our hobby. Please help GARF and our supporters make this a hobby we can be proud of!

I purchased a couple of corals from you about a year ago. The "Green Slimer" is an incredibly fast grower. In the last six months, my local LFS has not had to purchase "commercial" corals because I have been able to provide him with enough soft and hard coral cuttings to meet his needs! I wanted to thank you for the superb corals and for letting me provide "home grown" corals for my local market. You will be hearing from me soon for more of your beautiful corals.

 Take Care,

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I received my Reef Janitors on Friday and I am so amazed at how quickly they went to work. My tank was very colorful, but unfortunately it was colored with green, red, maroon and brown algae and it was not attractive. I have been Reef keeping for about 5 or 6 years and as much as I enjoy this hobby, I have been getting really discouraged by the algae problem, I tried chemicals, removing by hand, water changes, nothing seemed to work and only my hardiest mushrooms and polyps would survive, all of my corals would get choked out. I am totally re-enthused about reef-keeping now, the hermits and snails have already cleared out a ton of algae, I am seeing things in my tank that I forgot I had and it has only been two days. Thank you so much for such an inspiring and helpful web site and for offering such great deals and also for being so helpful on the phone when I was ordering, it was all so easy. I can't wait to order some corals!!!

Thanks again,
Cheryl Ellison

Just a note to let you know how pleased I am about my recent order and in doing business (it doesn't seem like business - it's too much fun) with you guys in general. This time I received acroporas, mushrooms, zooanthids, neat star polyps & some really cool pavonas! What an amazing variety of shapes, habits & colors. I took your advice some months back and let the "janitors" clean out what had been for years a fish only tank (with a lot of rock). The tank looks amazing now and there is only one fish in it.

 Thanks Again,
John A. Ferris

We have made some free GREEN WATER and Rotifers that you can use to grow your own Zooplankton and Phytoplankton. It is fun to set up two plastic buckets outside where they can receive morning of late afternoon light. You can fill the buckets with water from your reef, and this is a great reason to do that water change you have been wanting to do. These cultures are free if you ask for them when you place an order for Reef JanitorsTM or Corals. Please ask for this free gift so we can send it with your order. Call Leonel at 800-600-6163.

If you have purchased GARF corals in the past and you would like to assist in the symbiont DNA research GARF will be ready to trade rare SPS corals for fragments of SPS corals from your systems. By comparing the symbionts in your corals with the symbionts in the corals still at GARF we will be able to learn how corals adapt to changes. If you're interested in participating in this research please e-mail me at LeRoy @ garf.org leroy@garf.org

WE ARE DOING THE RESEARCH NEEDED TO BUILD THE FIRST PUBLIC AQAURIUM IN THE WORLD THAT WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE STUDY OF GEOTHERMAL WATER AND HOW IT CAN BE PROTECTED. MANY OF THE NUTRIENTS AND MINERALS NEEDED FOR A HEALTHY OCEAN COME FROM GEOTHERMAL SOURCES.

Geothermal springs both in the mountains of Idaho and in the deepest parts of the ocean may hold the cure for many diseases. Bacteria from geothermal springs are now being used in new medicines and in modern laboratory methods. The rapid cloning of DNA would not be possible if it were not for some bacteria from Yellow Stone Park.Every year thousands of geothermal springs are dried up because of poor irrigation practices.

This public aquarium will be the only aquarium in the world where you will be able to see cross sections of the many types of thermal springs. These displays will allow study of the habitats and the animals that live in these unique and secret places. Many of the endangered species will be able to be reproduced so they do not become extinct before we even have a chance to name them.

TO BE IMPLEMENTED THROUGH PLANT RECORDS, PUBLIC DISPLAYS, COLLECTIONS, APPLIED RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS, INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS, AND SALES OF QUALITY PRODUCTS.

Much of our research is being conducted in the field of reef farming. We are conducting these studies both in marine aquariums and in the ocean. Reef aquarium research is being conducted by members of the foundation both in the U.S. and in several other countries. We have been researching the best ways to control algae in reef aquariums for several years. Our REEF JANITORS are becoming the most popular algae eaters in the reef hobby.
We also supply expert advice on algae control for marine aquariums, wetlands and backyard ponds.
We provide quality educational programs to students here in Idaho and online. We have marine aquarium tours that are attended by hundreds of students each year. We are available to speak at aquarium clubs.
Our students propagate many of the invertebrates that we sell. Our collection of reef animals is growing very fast. You can join our research team by filling out one of the data collection forms on our pages. We hope you will print these pages for the use of your friends who are not yet on the web.

We are an Idaho Non Profit Organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge of reef keeping. Our live rock aquaculture research has produced many new techniques for sustaining marine life and propagating corals. We are currently growing many species of sps corals, mushrooms, etc. The Foundation is building a genetic bank in Idaho with collections from around the World. We specialize in reef janitors, and have shared this research with many people who need to control algae in land-based live rock aquaculture tanks.

I just wanted to write and thank all of you for your great customer service. I recently had a shipment that didn't get to me for two days due to DHL having mechanical problems at one of their stops. When I receved my shipment, all of the bags were very warm and by the next day I had lost almost half of what I ordered. I called in the morning and Leonel was kind enough to resend everything that I had lost. In fact on one of the plugs, there was a zoanthid that I had wanted that was in several of your pictures. Just getting that single polyp made my day. This has been my 3rd order not including the last reshipment and I have been very happy with everything I have received. I have more variety in my 2 small 5 gallons than my local pet store has in his 2 125 gallon reef tanks. Thanks again and I'll be sending some pictures soon!

Subject: THANKS FOR EVERYTHING

Hello Leroy,
I just had to write you to thank you for everything that you and your staff have done to help me create such a beautiful reef tank. Let me start by saying that I would never have done business with any internet company in the past. I am very careful about how my money is spent. YOUR BEAUTIFUL PICTURES ON THE WEB SITE CONVINCED ME TO GIVE YOU A TRY. BOY AM I GLAD I DID!

I started out by purchasing some garf grunge and reef janitors. The janitors have completely cleaned my tank and are busy working every day. I had an algae bloom that I could not control, and now, in only a few weeks, it is not only gone, but the tank is spotless!

The grunge is the most beautiful substrate I have ever seen! I have found numerous little corals and sponges growing in my tank, and I am experiencing a coraline algae bloom much faster than thought possible. Also, every experienced reef keeper that has seen my tank wants to know what the heck is that? Being used to seeing plain sand or crushed coral, they are delighted and mystified by the beauty! It has also added a level of stability and overall health to my tank that is amazing!

Next, as you know, I have ordered a few shipments of corals from you. I can't believe how fast they grow, and how beautiful they are! This is of course in addition to the rare species that you offer. Never in a million years could I have found the rare and different corals you have sent me. The pet shop, or reef "experts" would never have most of these beautiful rarities!

As a matter of fact, my local coral supplier has seen my tank and he cannot believe his eyes! He has told me that with over thirty years in the reef aquarium business, never has he seen such a beautiful tank! The "show" tank in his store is very pale by comparison!

I have told him that thanks to some real professionals in Idaho, this type of tank could be a reality for anyone! I am sure he will order from you soon, as he is most jealous of my aquarium, and has to have some for his own!

I will send you some pictures very soon. I am sure that you will agree, this is truly a beautiful, healthy, thriving, 90 gallon reef aquarium. I owe most of it to you and your staff!

From grunge, janitors, magic reef dust, and your help in recommending food and additives, everything I followed from what you have suggested has helped my tank achieve more goals than I ever expected! THANKS AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING! I CANNOT WAIT TO RECEIVE MY NEXT ORDER, VERY SOON!

Subject: Reef Janitors

Hi, I just wanted to send a note and tell you how glad I am that I purchased some reef
janitors from you. I had been reading as much as I could on your wonderful website and
decided that I needed to get some. I have a 20gl tank with 5 chunks of live rock in it about
the size of a large grapefruit. I was having trouble with a diatom algea bloom when I made
my order. Those little guys had that tank almost completely clean in about a week. I no
longer have to clean the glass myself. Thanks !!!

Hello,

You did right the first time and any algae that started was eaten by the organisms in

the grunge and the Janitors. You are in for smooth sailing. We often do not use skimmers for

about six to eight months, and then we use a small SeaClone from Aquarium Systems.

Thank you so much.

I wanted to let you know how thankful I am for your hair algae janitor crew.

I experienced a severe algae problem in my 45 gallon mixed reef in late 1998. I battled the
algae for about 7 months trying blue-legged hermit, Sally Lightfoots, frequent water
changes, and suctioning. While these methods kept the algae from progressing past a certain
point, it did nothing to alleviate the problem.

My boyfriend heard about GARF from a bulletin board and suggested I take a look.
This was a real reef-saver.

After removing the blue-legged hermits, I had your crew shipped to my office and took an
early lunch when the livestock arrived. I followed all of your suggestions and began to see a
difference within a month. The tank that had become a chore is now my pride and joy.

I am working part time in my LFS and am the "go-to" person for our customers with hair
algae problems. I always refer them to GARF and am completely honest
when I tell them that your janitors were the only thing that worked.

Once again, many thanks for the great service and for getting my tank turned around.
