It is not often that I get to write about someone else's tank. However, this one has a special spot in all of our hearts here at GARF as does the curator of this incredible tank.
Leonel Tapia has assisted most people who have called our office in one way or another. He has been a loyal, dedicated member of our GARF team for the past three years. Often he has played quarterback at the same time he is running in for a touchdown. At times he has three phones running at the same time, glue dripping from another hand, a bowl of corals in the other, but he is always found with a smile on his face.
Three years ago when Leonel applied for the job, I am certain he had no idea what he was getting into. We on the other hand had no clue how lucky and gifted our future would be. Leonel had never touched a coral, and he had never owned a fish tank.
It was slow going getting him to touch the coral. He didn't mind bagging them or selling them, but the smelling, touching, and naming them took sometime. At GARF time just seems to fly and weeks turn into months and then into years.
Later in that first year Leonel was propagating with the pros. He was teaching several of our Interns, and he was certainly making all of our days entertaining. He was calling out the corals scientific names like he always knew them, and he was describing the animals to people over the phone in detail. LeRoy and I were certain it was time for Leonel to set up a tank of his own.
His first tank at home was a fish only tank, and he has enjoyed it for about two years now. The reef tank that you see featured in this slide show is the first tank ones see when entering the doors at GARF. It took forever to get him to set up a true bulletproof reef system. It only happened when one day I decided to challenge him. I told him I would take on one of the other GARF tanks if he would take on this 29 gallon at the front entrance of my office.
He reminded me so much of myself when I first started my reef tank. This slide show is going to take you through many of the nine months of this very special and amazing 29-gallon bullet proof reef tank designed by Leonel Tapia.
FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS WE HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO PURCHASE, TRADE, AND SAVE AS MANY TYPES OF CORALS AS WE CAN.
We will continue to provide the most current data on reef farming for both education and profit.
Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.
The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.

|Many of the rare corals are offered to our members for 2 years before they are put on sale. We will soon have an E-mail list that will list the rarest color forms of sps corals and soft corals such as Xenia and Mushrooms.|
