Here is a 45 second Mpeg movie that shows how GARF propagates Capnella coral. The size of the file is 2958KB and could take a while to download. CapnellaPropagation.mpg

Below are frames that show how the movie is layed out.

Individual frames

THE BROOD STOCK

This Capnella is about six months and we have cut it once before. It is growing in one of our Mushroom brood stock reefs.

CUTTING THE CORAL

We are cutting the head off of this Capnella and we are leaving as much of the stalk as possible. We use sharp stainless steel scissors.

CATCHING THE HEAD

We use 12" stainless steel tweezers to catch the cuttings. We place each cutting in a bowl of reef water from the tank we are working in.

CUTTING THE HEAD

We then cut the head into several pieces. It is easy to divide the head in half first. Each half is then divided again. We try to leave at least two branches on each piece.

GLUING THE PLUG

We prepare a piece of bridal veil netting that is 1/4" wide and several inches long. This strip of netting is used to hold the cutting by using the line of GARF reef glue to attach it to the Reef PlugTM.

PLACING THE CORAL

Place the coral on the line of reef glue with the widest part of the cutting facing out from each side of the glue line. The netting will Not cover the entire cutting so that water can move over each side of the coral.

SECURING THE CORAL

It is easy to hold one end of the netting tight while you pull the netting across the cutting. Note the way we twist the netting over the top of the cutting. This allows us to adjust the width of the netting.

FINISHED

The netting is trimmed at each edge of the Reef PlugTM by simply pulling it apart after we have securly held the netting with our hand. The netting will soon be grown over by the coral and it does NOT need to be removed.

Into the FARM-IN-A-BOX

The cuttings are put into the racks in our new 30 liter FARM-IN-A-BOX that we are developing using the great new Mirabello complete aquarium from Aquarium Systems

One week later

This is one of the cuttings only one week after after it was placed into the FARM-IN-A-BOX
