This image shows one of my favorite views of the plate forming corals. When you look down from the top you can see how incredibly detailed the surface of these types of corals are. In this image there are four different Montiporas, but the ones we are interested in are the orange one and the green one. The image in the upper left corner shows one of the most interesting things that I have seen in my research on Montipora.

The small piece of orange Montiporas is completely encircled by the green one, but it continues to grow. In the main image you can see how the green Montipora is starting to shade the orange Montiporas as much as possible. This growth strategy is called 'over growth', and it starves the lower coral for needed light.

These corals have continued to grow and this weekend I will be removing several plates for propagation. The plates that I will remove are the ones that are shading the corals below them. When I have collected these plates in a bowl of reef water, I will take a pair of sharp scissors and slice each plate into long thin fragments. It is very easy to fragment these corals if you cut along the growth lines on the surface.

This type of Montiporas seems to produce the best yield from fragments that are 1/2 inch square. I mount these fragments on Aragocrete reef plugs by a squeezing a small drop of glue on to the plug, and then I immediately stand the small fragments up in the wet glue. Montiporas fragments can be covered with a large amount of slime and you get a much better attachment rate by rubbing them into wet super glue. The plugs are then dipped into reef water to cool the curing glue.

I will be making up several different combination plug so I can learn more about these fascinating corals and their growth strategy.

Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.

The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.
