|This picture shows another one of our wonderful Montiporas. There is an interesting phenomenon that several people who have Montiporas noticed about their new corals. Montiporas often lose their color when they are moved or transferred and they especially lose their color when they are shipped.
Almost every Montipora capricornis that we have purchased arrived colored reddish brown. After several weeks in captivity these corals change colors and no two are the same. It is really fascinating to take cuttings from one colony and move them to several different systems, because they change shape and form depending on the tank that they are placed in.
This Montiporas has a blue surface with bright pink growing edges. Plating Montiporas thrive under VHO lighting. They seem to grow much better in tanks that are not skimmed. Tanks that have a heavy load of fish that are actively feeding produce some of the best growth on our Montipora.
If the Montiporas in your system develop a brown color you can be sure that it is time to start water changes. Of course we use Instant Ocean and high-quality fresh water when we make our water changes. We have found a simple way to brighten the colors of any SPS coral. We change ten percent of the water each day for ten days. When you do this simple series of water changes you will notice that all of your colors become much brighter.
One of the reasons that SPS corals look brown is that the mineral and nutrient levels in the reef water are not in balance. All photosynthetic corals have a symbiotic algae that has a reddish brown color. When the nutrients are out of balance the photosynthetic algae thrives, and their color will hide the true color of the corals. Excessive skimming does not solve this problem as well as frequent small water changes.
FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS WE HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO PURCHASE, TRADE, AND SAVE AS MANY TYPES OF CORALS AS WE CAN.

Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.
The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.
