GARF'S REEF - STARTING A NEW REEF

In this picture you see my 4 year old reef tank. I can proudly say to you that every thing you see in this tank is tank raised. There is nothing from the ocean. The fish were raised in Idaho. I raised these fish from an egg no bigger than a snail egg. When first hatched the fry are no bigger than a comma. The only mom and dad they know are LeRoy and myself.

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION
LeRoy is busy feeding cultures of enriched rotifers and brine shrimp green water. This is a very important task and one that has to be accomplished at just the right time. I would also again like to give a great deal of credit to Randy Reed and his amazing frozen algae concentrates, green water and rotifers. As you can see in this picture of my 4-year-old reef, I do house some of the more difficult corals that many people have not been able to sustain for years.

THIS IS OUR NEW SET UP FOR GROWING LIVE FOOD.

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION
Feeding the parents properly is also so very important. If their diet is not varied and rich in oils the eggs produced will not have the dark yellow yoke sacks that the babies need to have to sustain them before they learn how to eat on their own.

To be honest with you I was afraid to steal mom and dads eggs from them the first time. I was certain they would be so mad at me they would not lay again or would lay somewhere else in the tank that I would not be able to get my hands on the eggs.

But they surprised me and as long as I rewarded them for the tremendous job they where doing they trusted me with their babies. After about the third time of laying and stealing their eggs I decided to set up the hatching tanks on my desk so that they could watch their own babies hatch and develop. I am not certain they appreciated this but it made it easier for me each time I collected the clutch of eggs.

I also had to learn that while the eggs were in the tank with Mom and Dad I was not Mom, if I tried to defend the nest from other fish he would stop. My job was just to keep counting days, feeding them the best food and making certain the temperature did not go below 80. I have learned so much on this subject it is simply amazing and they keep teaching me more. Each time I think I have sometime figured out my pairs tend to trick me once again.

THIS PAIR WAS HATCHED IN IDAHO

We are working on putting together a Clownfish hatching calendar. At first it was not that big of concern or problem keeping track, but when 4 of my pairs decided to spawn all at the same time got extremely confusing.

It is so important to remember not to rush any of the tasks that need to be done for they need to be done right and none of the details should be neglected because of trying to rush through a hatch.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL PAIR OF CLOWNS

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Having been a mom already I was certain my diaper changing days were over. However, it is so important that the water in the baby tank be kept clean. Each day and sometimes more than once a day I have to siphon out water from the baby tank to into a bucket. After I have cleaned the bottom of the tank with a air hose siphon, I replace the water with water from the mother tank.

I spend so much time trying not to siphon up a baby, and I can not believe how much of a mess these little guys can make over such a short period of time. However I can not stress to you how important this task is and it remains critical until you get the babies into an established reef tank.

THESE CLOWNS LIVE IN THIS SARCOPHYTON

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

To be perfectly honest with everyone, until my Clownfish hatching days I never touched a siphon hose. I always made someone else do it. I knew one day I would have to graduate to sucking up but it took these little guys to turn my heart. I was not going to let anyone else in their home. It is amazing what I will do for these animals, but I will never give up, nor shut up, and you must remember that IF I CAN DO THIS SO CAN YOU.

Depending on which type of Clownfish you are raising and what you are keeping your salinity at your Clownfish will go through metamorphose in about the 10 to 14 days. This is when they get their color and first strips.

There is not turning back at this point. For they capture your heart and their personality gives them so much character that you begin to find names for them. (Never did I dream that I would be so successful at this that I would not be able to count how many hatched or find enough names but that is where I am found now).

TANK RAISED CLOWNS READY TO FORM PAIRS

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

It is my hope to share these babies with all of our customers once we are secure in how to ship them and transport them properly. We will keep all of you posted on this goal. What we are planning on doing with the next couple of up coming articles is to take you through step by step instructions, with pictures on how to set up the hatching tank, how to grow your green water, enrich rotifers, brine shrimp etc.

I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we do. I smile when I look at these babies who have touched my life and given it so much value. Again, thank you LeRoy for giving me the push. I will continue to keep pushing, spreading the message - you start by starting.
