In this picture you see my 4 year old reef tank. I can proudly say to you that every thing you see in this tank is tank raised. There is nothing from the ocean. The fish were raised in Idaho. I raised these fish from an egg no bigger than a snail egg. When first hatched the fry are no bigger than a comma. The only mom and dad they know are LeRoy and myself.
THIS IS OUR NEW SET UP FOR GROWING LIVE FOOD.
To be honest with you I was afraid to steal mom and dads eggs from them the first time. I was certain they would be so mad at me they would not lay again or would lay somewhere else in the tank that I would not be able to get my hands on the eggs.
But they surprised me and as long as I rewarded them for the tremendous job they where doing they trusted me with their babies. After about the third time of laying and stealing their eggs I decided to set up the hatching tanks on my desk so that they could watch their own babies hatch and develop. I am not certain they appreciated this but it made it easier for me each time I collected the clutch of eggs.
I also had to learn that while the eggs were in the tank with Mom and Dad I was not Mom, if I tried to defend the nest from other fish he would stop. My job was just to keep counting days, feeding them the best food and making certain the temperature did not go below 80. I have learned so much on this subject it is simply amazing and they keep teaching me more. Each time I think I have sometime figured out my pairs tend to trick me once again.
It is so important to remember not to rush any of the tasks that need to be done for they need to be done right and none of the details should be neglected because of trying to rush through a hatch.
I spend so much time trying not to siphon up a baby, and I can not believe how much of a mess these little guys can make over such a short period of time. However I can not stress to you how important this task is and it remains critical until you get the babies into an established reef tank.
Depending on which type of Clownfish you are raising and what you are keeping your salinity at your Clownfish will go through metamorphose in about the 10 to 14 days. This is when they get their color and first strips.
There is not turning back at this point. For they capture your heart and their personality gives them so much character that you begin to find names for them. (Never did I dream that I would be so successful at this that I would not be able to count how many hatched or find enough names but that is where I am found now).
I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we do. I smile when I look at these babies who have touched my life and given it so much value. Again, thank you LeRoy for giving me the push. I will continue to keep pushing, spreading the message - you start by starting.
