Prior to the janitors I had tried stepping up the filtration, and increased water changes, but the green hair algae was out of control. I threw in a lawnmower blenny, sailfin tang, reduced the lighting, and reduced the phosphates. Nothing worked, and I was at the end of the rope. I pulled out half of the algae covered rock, thinking that the reduced surface area would help. At this point nothing worked, and I was ready to break the tank down and quit, Out of desperation, I pulled all but 3 of the remaining rocks out of the tank, and pressure washed them in the driveway, and threw them back in. ( I realize this is not a recommended procedure), I noticed that even that didn't work, as the algae was starting to grow back. My brother recommended a janitor pack, so I bought 250 snails, crabs, etc. It has been 10 months, and the tank has been algae free. I highly recommend to everyone, just buy the janitors first, and save yourself the headache, I did notice the janitors were more successful with the algae that was less than 1/2 inch tall. The xenia Brood stock Special consists of 5 adult xenia colonies for 100.00 shipping and handling is running about 59.00. Each xenia colony propagated using our methods will make at least 15 to 20 new babies each. Four weeks after propagation you will be able to trade or share your new babies with your reefing friends.

In the this picture there are a few of the broodstock Xenia in this special. One is from the Smithsonian, I feel lucky we got our hands on this animal before their exhibit was shut down. This animal looks a great deal like the animal Julian Sprung calls the silver tip. For it is two colored and has a bright silver line in each polyp.

I cut the head off the stock and cut the head into many pieces using the bridal veil netting for attaching it to the plugs. This animal also attaches in about seven days.

You can actually increase the price of the product you are farming if you add more than one kind of Xenia to the plug. I do this at the time I am placing the bridal veil netting on; I use one cutting of one type and one of another.
