This beautiful POM-POM Xenia is the world famous Sally Jo's one hundred percent pulsing POM-POM. Sally Jo discovered one part of one polyp in a 135 gallon reef take after a wild colony of Fiji POM-POM Xenias crashed in 1996. At GARF we had been trying to acquire a colony of POM-POM Xenia for several months. Wild colonies of Xenia are notoriously difficult to acclimate to captivity, and this was certainly the case in 1996 before we knew as much as we do now about Xenia culture.
Shortly after a beautiful wild colony of Xenia disintegrated in the 135 gallon reef tank Sally Jo noticed a small dot of pink color trapped in the branches of a piece of dead coral. She told us that she was certain that that was a small part of that POM-POM Xenia so we watched it for the next several days. Eventually the small dot grew into a Polyp, and during the next several days several other small polyps developed.
At this time Sally Jo's first reef was several months old and I gave her the small start of POM-POM Xenia to take into her office. She was able to nurture it into a mother colony, and we found that each clone copy becomes more hardy and easier to grow in captivity. This Xenia is now in almost every state in United States and in several foreign countries.
The Geothermal Aquaculture Research Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization dependent on sales of quality products and our special Annual Events to support our eduacation programs. These projects sustain our service programs and ongoing research we provide to our Community and the World. We are an Idaho Non Profit Organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge of reef keeping. Our live rock aquaculture research has produced many new techniques for sustaining marine life and propagating corals. We are currently growing many species of sps corals, mushrooms, etc. The Foundation is building a genetic bank in Idaho with collections from around the World. We specialize in reef janitors, and have shared this research with many people who need to control algae in land-based live rock aquaculture tanks.
