GARF'S NEW INTERN - ARTICLE BY TREVER - BULLET PROOF REEFS
We use many different species of reef janitors
to control pest algae in all of our reef aquariums.
Fluorescent lights should be used to light the bullet proof reef tank, in a proportion of 1 white light for every 2 blue lights (since blue light penetrates deeper into the ocean than any other color, most marine organisms are adapted to use blue light). Sally Jo uses normal output fluorescent light until the coralline algae is thriving. After six months see upgrades to Very High Output -VHO- if the reef is going to be home to SPS corals. The water should be at a salinity of 1.023 and the temperature should be kept at a constant 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
As organisms use calcium and trace elements from the water in the tank, nutrient supplements should be added; GARF uses SeaChem supplements: Reef Plus, Reef Complete, Reef Calcium, Reef Advantage Calcium and Reef Builder.
