ROCK OF THE WEEK #5 - THIS EDDIE ORIGINAL ARCH SCULPTURE
WILL MAKE A WONDERFUL STEADY BASE FOR YOUR REEF

This dramatic arch would be a great prize rock for an aquarium. What made me notice this rock, was the unusual way that the spaces inside the rock are arranged. The rock is honeycombed with lots of miniature arches. This is not only visually interesting, but useful for the aquarist as well; these spaces would make a perfect hiding place for shy fish.

This rock weighs 18.25 pounds. All aragocrete rock costs five dollars a pound with free shipping, and at that price this rock costs 91.25 dollars. This arch is 22 inches in length, 11 inches in height and 8 inches in width. Additionally, many other sizes of arch are available. For a reef tank, the base material that you use is extremely important.

If you start out with high quality base material, your tank will look good and function well in the long run. There are many inappropriate base materials on the market right now, like lava rock and most live rocks.

Lava rock, like all igneous (volcanic) rocks does not have the buffering capacity of other rocks, and at best will not have the good effects of a calcium carbonate structure. At worst, these rocks can contain dangerous metals which will leach out and hurt the animals in your tank. Most live rock is also a poor base material.

It is a shame that live rock is sold so exclusively as the material for a tank. First of all, the very material that a live rock is made out of can have considerable downsides. It could be made of something that contains metals, or lacks buffering capacity among other problems. Live rock also can contain many potentially harmful organisms. These organisms can be removed from the rock, but at great cost.

After the rocks have been stored in the dark or washed with fresh water, the life that is left on the rock is scant. Those are the reasons that we use aragocrete rock here at GARF. The bullet-proof reef system calls for about a pound of aragocrete per gallon.

After the aragocrete has been seeded with grunge, a mixture of helpful organisms from GARF╠s tanks, the aragocrete will become more alive, and grow faster than any so-called "live rock." We have many aragocrete sculptures for sale at GARF, including this beautiful arch.

There are also instructions on our website for making your own aragocrete rock. Be the first to call in and own this arch!
