SALLY JO'S PICTURES OF THE WEEK 6/8/99

REEF PICTURES SPONSORED BY REEF JANITORSTM

Most of the Xenia that have in the unconnected genetic bank have large polyps with pinnated tentacles that move in a rhythmic motion. These polyps are connected at the base. The colors we have are cream, biege, and light brown. We have been growing a great colony from Bali that is cream with brown edges on the polyps. This Xenia is growing very fast. It is the finest looking pulse coral I have ever seen!
THIS IS THE BALI XENIA

We have been able to propagate this Xenia by cutting off one polyp and placing it on a reef plug under a piece of fine netting. The best way to remove one polyp is to suck the polyp up into an air line tube and snip it off with a pair of scissors. The embossed type of fine bridal veil has worked very well for this type of production. We hold the netting in place with a rubber band. We have just stared making a large number of this Xenia and the newest clones - generation 5 - seem to be much easier to grow and to move from one aquarium to another. We have even moved some of the cuttings into new aquariums and they grow. This would have been impossible a year and a half ago.

During the next year we will collecting several strains of the species.

These Xenia cuttings are only 2 months old. They were made from single polyps that we took from Sally Jo's reef. You can cut these corals down the middle with a sharp pair of scissors and then both sides will heal. We often do this several times to create colonies with many tops. When the coral is healthy it will heal from this cut in 2 days. We wait several weeks before we cut the two new heads down the middle. After the Xenia heals it will now have 4 heads. When we have a Xenia that has 8 tops we can remove one each week to supply us with many polyps.

This Xenia is the most popular one we grow. It is very hardy, but it can not survive for long if the reef aquarium is allowed to get above 80 degrees. This picture shows how large a cutting of this coral can grow in 5 months. The cutting was made from a single polyp that was attached to a reef plug with bridal veil netting. This coral was grown in our 135 gallon reef with 4 - 6 foot long VHO bulbs. These are the Xenias that we will be cutting this week for an experiment we are doing on propagation. We will be hanging the cuttings from the lights with fishing line after we put them on plugs. We hope to increase the production by using space in the middle of the reef aquarium.

IMPORTANT

1. Keep the Iodine level up by using Sea Chem Reef Plus at twice the regular dose.

2. Keep the reef below 76 degrees.
3. Move the Xenia into as many tanks as possible.
4. Keep cutting and trimming the colonies.
