SALLY JO'S PICTURES OF THE WEEK 10/5/99

REEF PICTURES SPONSORED BY REEF JANITORSTM

OUR FIRST CORAL ORDER FORM

THESE PICTURES SHOW SOME OF THE NICE SARCOPHYTONS THAT WE HAVE TRADED FOR IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS.

This picture shows a small Sarcophyton next to a large leaf shaped Sinularia soft coral. Notice the many colors of Zoanthids that are growing in this 120 gallon reef aquarium.

Sarcophytons we have traded for

This reef has four VHO four foot 110 watt lights and two 40 watt lights. We use a SeaClone skimmer and an Eco-Sand Plenum. The reef is now two years old.

THIS SMALL GOLD CROWN SARCOPHYTON IS GROWING VERY FAST.

This coral is in the 150 gallon reef in the front office. This SPS coral reef aquarium has 8 -VHO four foot 110 watt lights. This is the reef that has the new Xenia Bed FilterTM that we are researching with the Smithsonian Museum.

Sarcophytons we have traded for

This reef has over 70 strains of SPS corals and many Soft corals. Many of the strains of SPS corals are from the Soloman Islands. We purchased many of the farmed corals last Semester and we are growing them into new brood stock.

When you are buying invertebrates that will be used for parent colonies always look for the ones with the brightest colors. Soft corals and Mushrooms come in many shades of blue, purple, green, red, and yellow.
It is better to buy a smaller well colored coral than a larger one that is just brown.

THIS SARCOPHYTON WAS GROWN IN BOISE. WE FIRST IMPORTED THIS STRAIN IN 1995 AND IT WAS GROWN IN SOMEONE ELSES AQUARIUM.

This is one of the combination rocks that has several corals that grow very well together.

Sarcophytons we have traded for

Many retail stores have told us that this type of Combo Rocks sell very well. The only rule we have on size is related to what we have learned about maketing tank grown live rocks. Easy to grow species will be bought most often by people who are just starting a reef aquarium. These people tend to want to fill the new tank with rock so they will pick out cuttings on larger rocks. After a reef aquarium is full of live rock and it is ready to stock with small polyp stony corals people will often choose cuttings on smaller rocks.

Shape and texture are the two most important things to look for when you purchase or make base rock. Remember if you start with a lump of rock you will end up with a lump of rock covered with coraline. If you start with a fine looking base rock you will end up with a fine looking live rock.

SOME GOOD SPECIES TO PUT TOGETHER ON ONE ROCK

LEATHER CORALS - GREEN STARS

ZOANTHIDS - PALYTHOA

ZOANTHIDS - ZOANTHIDS

MUSHROOMS - MUSHROOMS

FINGER CORAL - LEATHER CORAL

GREEN STARS - BROWN STARS

IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY TYPES OF SARCOPHYTONS THERE ARE! WE ARE VERY INTERESTED IN TRADING FOR AS MANY TYPES AS WE CAN FIND

We do not know if any of these strains will produce a different cancer fighting chemical, but if the ability to fight of disease is any indication then some strains do have an astounding capacity for healing from be ing cut. We hope that by making as many strains available to medical researchers as possible that one of the extracts will be very effective in fighting tumors.
