OUR FIRST CORAL ORDER FORM
SINULARIA CUTTING DIAGRAM

WE HAVE TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SENT US SOFT CORALS

These pictures show how we propagate the soft tree shaped corals. These are the types of corals we need for our research. We are trading our rare corals that are not yet for sale for these corals. The Green Tree shaped corals and the Sarcophyton - leather corals - are very important for our research. You can use the information on this page to make cuttings that you can trade.
The picture below shows one of the best growing Green Tree shaped corals that we have. We have made many cuttings from this coral using the netting method.

We are growing this coral in many systems so we can develop a "cookbook" method that anyone can follow. There are several ways to attach these coral, but the way we show here is very easy.

THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE WAY WE CUT THESE CORALS AND THE WAY
WE USE NETTING TO ATTACH THE CUTTINGS TO THE REEF PLUGS

THE MATERIALS YOU NEED ARE:
  • BRIDAL VEIL NETTING - LARGER HOLES
  • SMALL ROCKS OR REEF PLUGS
  • REEF GLUE
  • CUTTINGS

We cut the netting into 1/4" strips about 2 inches long

    METHOD
  • GLUE ONE SIDE OF NETTING TO PLUG
  • PLACE CUTTING ON PLUG SO ONE HALF IS ON EACH SIDE OF PLUG
  • PULL NETTING ACROSS CUTTING AND HOLD TIGHTLY TO PLUG
  • GLUE OTHER SIDE OF PLUG DOWN
This method works better than using a larger piece of netting because these delicate corals need the water flow over the coral so they do not become infected. We have used a type of bridal veil netting that allows the individual polyps to poke through the holes. This seems to work best on the softer more delicate corals.

THIS PICTURE SHOWS A CUTTING THAT IS ABOUT ONE WEEK OLD

Notice how the netting is placed so each end of the cutting is sticking out
so that each end can grow into a new coral. These cuttings are placed in a strong water flow.

This is the other type of green coral that we need for our genetic research. If you have any of these corals it is very safe to make cuttings. We allow the mother colony to grow until all of the polyps are opening each day. After the coral is growing we take one cutting and we often place the finished cutting close to the mother colony so there is very little stress from water or lighting changes.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF A CORAL AFTER WE HAVE CUT ONE OF THE BRANCHES OFF.

We have not hurt any coral by taking a cutting if the coral was healthy and growing before we cut it. This is a great, safe project and we hope you make some cuttings soon!

REMEMBER - SAFE A REEF - GROW YOUR OWN

FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS WE HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO PURCHASE, TRADE,
AND SAVE AS MANY TYPES OF CORALS AS WE CAN.
