This strain of Pom Pom Xenia pulses 100 percent of the time. This is the only Xenia that pulses all of the time. I have seen dozens of these clones start pulsing when they only have one polyp.
We have been able to propagate this coral for the last four years. This coral came in from Fiji in 1995 and all but one polyp died. Sally Jo found the single polyp in the 135 gallon reef. We were thrilled when it grew into a large colony. Before that time we had tried many times to import wild Xenia and they had all perished in transit to Boise.
We now have many strains of captive raised Xenia growing in our reefs. The Xenia grow very well in our SPS coral reef aquariums. The rare orange Montipora that you can see above and behind the Xenia was sent to GARF by Mitch at American Ingenuity in L.A. California. We now have four colors of these encrusting Montipora . THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY TYPES OF XENIA WE RECIEVED FROM THE SMITHSONIAN Almost every Xenia we trade for comes to us as a small cutting. The small cuttings ship MUCH better than larger ones. We learned years ago that it is better to receive a live small Xenia than a dead large one.
We have been collecting many strains of xenia. Several of these corals were planted next to each other on the same Aragocretetm arch. You can see that the Xenia do not sting each other. Before we cut these corals this group looked like a multicolored tapestry that waved in the water currents.
We plan to build several new Xenia Bed Filterstm during this semester. We are researching new ways to produce cuttings. Each species of Xenia has different requirements. The tall strains with thin stalks do very well when we cut them into small sections that have a piece of the body and at least ten polyps. We use the Bridal veil that has the largest holes to hold the cuttings on the Reef Plugstm. The polyps soon expand and each polyp grows out of a single hole in the netting.

This reef has no skimmer and the SPS corals are growing very well. Since we have added the Xenia Bed FilterTM the tank has been getting better, and the corals have been growing very fast. |
