This picture shows a few of the many types of Xenia that we grow in this system. We are adding to our collection each month. Many of you have been kind enough to include new types of Xenia in the corals you have sent for trade. |
We have tested many different fiters that use marine organisms to remove excess nutrients from the water. This filter produces many of the desired results, and the finished product is much more valuable than macro algae.
This filter is made from Plexi-glass. The only light is a new Aquarium System Power Compact with one 65 K bulb. The Xenia are growing very fast and we have been able to make many new cuttings from this tank. We will continue to trim these corals as they grow so we have a new source of cuttings. By trimming the Xenia we are exporting nutrients from the 150 gallon sps reef.

The water from the sump below LeRoy's 150 gallon sps reef is pumped into this filter through the SeaSwirl oscillator. The water sweeps back and forth over the corals so the polyps are always moving. This water flow seems to be very good for the Xenia. The filter tank is 30 inches long and 18 inches wide. The tank is only 13 inches tall. We have four plastic racks in the filter. Each rack is drilled with one inch holes so about 75 corals can be placed on each rack. The legs of the racks are all different lenghts and the tallest rack is at the back of the filter. The second SeaSwirl oscillator is placed in the opposite corner and a Maxi-Jet 1200 runs it. The two water flows create random currents as they change direction.

We will soon be building a copy of this Xenia Bed filter that will have different lights. Each coral will be divided and one half of it will be put in each filter. All other parameters will be the same so we can judge the effects of lighting on the growth and form. The 150 gallon sps reef is looking much healthier with this new filter. Many of these types of Xenia are available for sale when you call our toll free phone number 800-600-6163. We are very interested in getting e-mail from anyone who makes a filter that uses Xenia to remove nutrients from reef aquarium water.
