SALLY JO'S PICTURES OF THE WEEK

The first picture is of Sally Jo's fish in the second oldest reef (4 years) both of these fish are very helpful in reef management. The larger fish is named Wally and he eats algae. The smaller fish is a Dragonet that is sold as a Goby. This fish is named Jewells and he eats several types of flat worms. One of the flat worms is transparent and it eats Acropora. You can also see one of my favorite crabs in the lower right hand corner of this picture. We use a variety of hermit crabs and small snails in every aquarium.

The second picture shows three of the many species of Xenia that Sally Jo grows in her reef aquariums. These Xenia and many other soft corals have been acclimated to reef aquarium for last several years, and they're getting hardy and easy to keep in many different systems. It is amazing to watch strains of coral as they become adapted to captivity. Captive raised corals are much more hardy than collected corals and this makes it much easier for people to start their own reef. The beautiful green coral in the middle of this picture is one of the many strains of green Nephthea at that we are collecting

GEOTHERMAL AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The green Nephthea are not for sale because we are collecting strains that may eventually be returned to an aquaculture facility on an island in the Pacific. The green Nephthea are one of the most important corals that we are looking for. We are willing to trade rare and beautiful Acropora fragments for small cuttings of these coral.

Sometimes I forget how fun it can be to watch the Reef Janitorstm as they go about their duties. It is important to have the mixture of crabs and snails custom picked for your reef aquarium. Both Leonel and Brian are experts in algae control. You can be sure that they will choose the right mixture from GARF's extensive collection of algae eaters.

The GARF staff knows that each aquarium is different and they will ask about the size, lighting, and age of your reef. Summer is the most important time to add extra janitorstm because there is more light and the reef will be a bit warmer. When you order any Reef Janitor pactm you can pick a free coral or two pounds of GARF's FAMOUS GRUNGE LIVE SAND ACTIVATOR Reef Janitors tm or call toll free 800-600-6163.
